The October Revolution
The October Revolution
The October Revolution's bases was started by Vladimir Lenin. Lenin, the exile of leader of Bolsheviks, returned with aid from the Germans to persuade Russia to leave the war. He published the April Theses, which criticized the provisional government. He called for a struggle for a socialist program based on independent action of working class. He argued that Russia should end the war, banks should be nationalized, workers should control industries and establish a new communist party. His program formed the basis of the October Revolution and ended Russia’s participation in WWI on the 5th December, 1917.(Allison, n.d.)
In March 1918, the Bolsheviks pulled Russia out of WWI. There was growing opposition to Bolshevik rule and this lead to civil war between the Reds(Bolsheviks) and the Whites(Tzarist)
There was a division between the Reds and the Whites. The Tzarist got financial and artillery support from America, United Kingdom and France. The reason why the Bolshevik win because of few advantages.(Allison, n.d.)
Advantages for the Red Army
-‐ Leadership from Lenin and Trotsky
-‐ Trotsky organized a tough system of discipline in order to control the army.
-‐ Before the start of civil war, they controlled the key area in Russia.(Petrograd and
Moscow)
-‐ Railways were there which made communication extremely effective to the Red
Army.
-‐ The area they controlled provided fresh recruitment for the Red Army.
-‐ Industrial buildings and factories are located here which allowed the Bolsheviks‘
troop to keep fresh supply for weapons, ammunition and supplies
-‐ Also, Lenin has created CHEKA to hunt down the people that go against anyone that
suspected for the Bolsheviks.
The Tzarist lost because of a few reasons.
Weaknesses of the White Army
-‐ Although the White Army has experienced military commanders but conflict of
interest is dividing the leadership within the army
-‐ Although they surrounded the Bolsheviks, they had difYiculties in transferring
troops into different places.
Orwell used the Battle of Cowshed to represent The October Revolution in Animal Farm. The Battle of Cowshed was mainly about Mr Jones leading his people to the farm with them. This was the exactly the same as the Russian Revolution's Civil War. The Civil War between the Reds and the Whites are mainly just the same as the animals and the human beings. Orwell description in the Battle of Cowshed changed a little bit, like the gun they kept after the battle. Although there are differences between two events, it is still acceptable because one is real and one is fiction.
